AFTER 45 YEARS OF DOING FACIALS, I HAVE LEARNED THAT EVERY SEASON BRINGS ITS OWN SKINCARE CHANGES.
Fall is especially interesting because I can often look at someone’s skin and see the story of their summer – sun, heat, travel, swimming, dehydration and sometimes a little too much neglect.
Here are seven mistakes I see every fall, and what I recommend instead.
1. THEY STOP USING SUNSCREEN
Just because summer is over doesn’t mean the sun disappears. I always tell my clients: protect your skin all year long. Sunscreen, a good 4 inch brim hat, and covering up are still important.
2. THEY SUDDENLY START OVER-EXFLOIAITNG
After summer, people sometimes want to ‘scrub everything away’ – a tan, dryness, brown spots and rough texture. But aggressive exfoliation can leave your skin irritated and compromised.
My advice: exfoliate intelligently, not aggressively. Always use a gentle scrub.
3. THEY DON’T CHANGE THEIR MOISTURIZER
Summer and fall are different. As the weather changes, your skin may need more hydration and nourishment. If your skin starts feeling tight or dry, it may be time to reassess your moisturizer.
4. THEY FORGET THEIR NECK AND DÉCOLLETÉ
I see this all the time. People take wonderful care of their faces and completely forget the skin below the jawline. Your neck and décolleté deserve the same attention, hydration and sun protection as your face.
5. THEY TRY TOO MANY NEW PRODUCTS AT ONCE
Fall brings new products, new trends and lots of skincare advice, especially from social media non-professionals. But please don’t put six new products on your face at the same time. If your skin reacts, you won’t know what caused it. Introduce new products slowly and listen to your skin. If your skin reacts, you won’t know what caused it. Introduce new products slowly and listen to your skin.
6.THEY IGNORE WHAT SUMMER HAS DONE TO THEIR SKIN
This is the time to take a close look.
- Are you seeing more pigmentation?
- Is your skin dehydrated?
- Are your pores congested?
- Does your skin feel rough or sensitive?
Fall is a wonderful time to have your skin professionally evaluated and give it exactly what it needs.
7. THEY FORGET THAT CONSISTENCY MATTERS MORE THAN TRENDS
After more than 45 years in business, this may be the biggest lesson I can share:
You don’t need every new skincare trend. You need a routine that works for your skin – and you need to be consistent.
I’ve treated thousands of faces over the years, and I’ve learned that beautiful skin isn’t created overnight. It’s created through good habits, proper protection, professional care and consistency.
MY FALL SKINCARE REMINDER
As we move into fall, don’t think about starting over. Think about resetting. Take a good look at your skin, give it the hydration it needs, protect it from the sun, exfoliate appropriately and don’t forget your neck and décolleté. After 45 years of doing facials, I still believe the best skincare advice is often the simplest:
LISTEN TO YOUR SKIN. TAKE CARE OF IT. AND DON’T CHASE EVERY TREND.
With love,
Veronica
